Ephrata Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash Near George, Quincy Driver Charged

GEORGE, Wash. — A deadly two-car crash Sunday afternoon northeast of George claimed the life of an Ephrata man and resulted in vehicular homicide charges against another driver, according to the Washington State Patrol. The collision occurred along a rural stretch of highway and forced the roadway to shut down for several hours as investigators worked the scene.

Authorities said the crash happened around 5:45 p.m. on State Route 283 at White Trail Road, about seven miles northeast of George. A press memo from the Washington State Patrol said Alejandro Cartagena Hernandez, 53, was driving a pickup truck northbound when a second pickup traveling south crossed the centerline. The vehicles collided head-on, causing extensive damage.

Investigators identified the second driver as Gerardo Silva Diaz, 39, of Quincy. Troopers said Silva Diaz’s vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck Cartagena Hernandez’s pickup. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene within minutes, finding both vehicles heavily damaged and debris scattered across the roadway.

Cartagena Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene, officials confirmed. Despite efforts by first responders, his injuries were fatal. Authorities said next of kin were notified as the area was secured. The loss has deeply impacted the Ephrata community, where Cartagena Hernandez was known and lived.

Silva Diaz was injured in the crash and was transported to Quincy Valley Medical Center for treatment. According to the Washington State Patrol, intoxicating substances were involved, leading investigators to charge Silva Diaz with vehicular homicide. Officials have not released additional details about his condition or whether further charges may be filed as the case progresses.

The crash caused State Route 283 to be closed for approximately four hours while troopers conducted a full collision investigation. Crews documented evidence, examined skid marks, and cleared debris to make the roadway safe. Drivers in the area were urged to find alternate routes during the closure.

The Washington State Patrol said the investigation remains ongoing as reports are finalized. Troopers are reminding drivers of the severe consequences of impaired driving, emphasizing that crossing the centerline can have deadly results. Authorities encourage motorists to drive sober, stay alert, and obey traffic laws to help prevent future tragedies.
