BOONE COUNTY, Ill. — A deadly head-on collision involving a semi-truck claimed the life of a Rockford man Wednesday afternoon, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on January 14 along Route 20 near Shattuck Road, drawing a significant emergency response as first responders worked to secure the scene and assist those involved.
Deputies said 78-year-old Richard Todd of Rockford was driving westbound on Route 20 when his vehicle crossed the center line for reasons that remain under investigation. Todd’s vehicle collided head-on with an eastbound semi-truck, resulting in severe damage. Authorities said the impact was substantial, leaving little chance for survival.
Todd was pronounced dead at the scene. The Boone County Coroner’s Office responded and later confirmed his identity. No other fatalities were reported. Officials have not released information about whether Todd was wearing a seatbelt or if any medical issues may have contributed to the crash.
The driver of the semi-truck sustained only minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. That driver was evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene. Authorities did not say whether the semi was carrying a load at the time of the collision or where the truck was traveling from or headed to.
Route 20 was partially closed for several hours as deputies and crash investigators examined the scene, documented evidence, and worked to determine what led up to the collision. Traffic was slowed in both directions as crews cleared debris from the roadway and ensured the area was safe for drivers.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing. Deputies are continuing to review all contributing factors, including road conditions, vehicle speed, and driver behavior. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office as authorities work to fully understand the circumstances behind the fatal crash.
