77-Year-Old Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle on Central Avenue in Colonie

COLONIE, N.Y. — Authorities in Colonie are investigating a deadly car-versus-pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a 77-year-old man Wednesday evening along a busy stretch of Central Avenue. The incident occurred during the early evening hours and has prompted an ongoing traffic safety investigation.

According to the Colonie Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 5:34 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, to the area of 1157 Central Avenue following reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. When police and emergency medical crews arrived, they found the pedestrian seriously injured and in need of immediate medical attention.

The victim was identified as Cornelius Morrison, 77, of Albany. Morrison was transported by Colonie Emergency Medical Services to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, police said Morrison later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene and has been fully cooperative with law enforcement. Police confirmed that the driver was not impaired at the time of the incident. At this stage of the investigation, authorities said no criminal charges have been filed and none are expected to be filed in connection with the crash.

The Colonie Police Traffic Safety Division is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officers are working to determine what factors may have contributed to the crash, including traffic flow, visibility, roadway conditions, and whether the pedestrian was crossing within a designated area. Police emphasized that the investigation is still active and ongoing.

Central Avenue is a heavily traveled roadway, particularly during evening hours, and the crash has raised concerns about pedestrian safety in the area. Authorities are reminding both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert and cautious, especially in high-traffic corridors.
