HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a man early Wednesday morning along Research Park Boulevard in Huntsville. The deadly incident occurred in the pre-dawn hours and involved a pedestrian, drawing a large emergency response from police, firefighters, and paramedics.

(HEMSI), Huntsville Fire and Rescue, and the Huntsville Police Department all responded to the scene after receiving reports of a serious collision. When first responders arrived, they found a pedestrian who had suffered critical injuries.
HEMSI spokesperson Don Webster confirmed that the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The Madison County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Willie Lanier, 38. Research Park Boulevard is a major roadway in Huntsville that sees steady traffic, even during overnight hours. Following the crash, sections of the road were impacted as officers secured the area and conducted their investigation. Crews worked to document evidence, assess roadway conditions, and ensure the scene was safe before traffic was allowed to resume.
At this stage, authorities have not released information regarding potential charges, citations, or contributing factors such as speed, impairment, or visibility. Police said these details will be determined as investigators continue to review evidence, speak with witnesses, and examine any available surveillance footage from the area.
The Huntsville Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are reminding both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, particularly during early-morning hours when visibility is reduced. Drivers are urged to stay alert for pedestrians, while pedestrians are encouraged to wear visible clothing and use caution when near roadways. Additional information may be released as investigators work to determine exactly what led to the death of Willie Lanier.
