Derrick Manigault killed After Deadly Police Shooting at Gastonia Convenience Store

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities have identified the man who was killed in a police-involved shooting at a Gastonia convenience store, an incident that has sparked concern as state investigators work to determine what led to the use of deadly force. The shooting occurred Friday evening at a busy neighborhood store and remains under active review.

Gastonia police said officers were called to Jakob’s Food Mart on Gaston Avenue around 6 p.m. on Friday. During the encounter, officers fired their weapons, striking a man at the scene. He was transported to a hospital for emergency treatment, but later died from his injuries. At the time of the shooting, police did not immediately release the victim’s identity.

On Monday, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed the man killed was Derrick Manigault. Officials have not released his age or additional personal details. The SBI said Manigault died as a result of injuries sustained during the shooting, but further information about his condition before he was taken to the hospital has not been made public.

State investigators confirmed that two Gastonia police officers were involved in the incident and both discharged their service weapons. As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, both officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. Authorities have not disclosed how long the officers have served with the department.

Officials have not said what led to the shooting or what prompted officers to open fire. Police have not confirmed whether Manigault was armed or if there was a confrontation prior to the gunfire. Investigators are expected to examine all available evidence, including surveillance video from the convenience store and nearby businesses, as well as body-worn camera footage.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case to ensure an independent and thorough review. The agency will collect witness statements, analyze physical evidence, and review video recordings to determine whether the officers’ actions were justified and followed department policy and state law.

No criminal charges or disciplinary actions have been announced at this time. Officials say more information will be released once the investigation progresses. As the case unfolds, community members continue to seek clarity and accountability following the fatal shooting of Derrick Manigault at a local convenience store.
