STOCKTON, Calif. — Authorities have identified the driver who died in a serious single-vehicle crash Sunday night in Stockton, an incident that also left five passengers injured, including a teenage boy. The crash occurred around 9 p.m. in the area of Navy Drive and Fresno Avenue and prompted an extensive response from police, firefighters, and medical crews.
The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased driver as Andre Dieon Carter, 33, of Stockton. According to the Stockton Police Department, Carter was behind the wheel at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not yet released details about what led up to the collision.
Police said there were five passengers inside the vehicle when it crashed. Those passengers included a 14-year-old boy, an 18-year-old man, a 20-year-old man, a 21-year-old woman, and a 26-year-old man. The crash caused injuries to all five occupants, though officials said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Three of the passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police said their injuries were serious enough to require further medical care but were not expected to be fatal. The remaining two passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries and did not need to be taken to the hospital, according to officers.
The Stockton Police Department’s traffic unit is leading the ongoing investigation into the crash. Authorities said investigators will work to determine the cause, including whether speed, impairment, road conditions, or mechanical problems may have been factors. At this stage, police stressed that the investigation is still active and that no conclusions have been reached.
In the aftermath of the crash, Navy Drive was shut down between Fresno Avenue and Tillie Lewis Drive to allow officers to investigate and crews to clear the scene. The closure continued into Monday morning. Around 8 a.m., Stockton Public Works responded to repair a damaged sewage line in the area, and police said Navy Drive remains closed due to ongoing construction. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes as the investigation continues and repairs are completed.
