LONDON, W.Va. — A Wednesday evening traffic crash in eastern Kanawha County claimed the life of a 65-year-old woman and sent several others to the hospital, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department. The deadly collision happened around 6 p.m. along U.S. Route 60 in the Glasgow area.
Deputies identified the victim as Sharon Williams, 65, of Hansford, West Virginia. Law enforcement officials said Williams was traveling westbound on Route 60 when she pulled off to the right side of the roadway for a short period of time. Investigators believe she then attempted to make a U-turn to head back east.
As Williams re-entered the highway, her vehicle was struck on the driver’s side door by an oncoming pickup truck traveling eastbound. Deputies said the impact was severe, and Williams was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of her injuries.
A six-year-old child who was riding in Williams’ vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Deputies noted that the child was seated in the front passenger seat and was not properly restrained in a booster seat, as required by state law.
The two occupants of the pickup truck were also injured in the crash and transported to the hospital. Authorities said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and both are expected to recover. Emergency responders worked quickly to assist all those involved and clear the roadway.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department said the crash remains under investigation, but deputies do not expect any criminal charges to be filed. Officials emphasized the importance of proper child restraints and safe turning maneuvers, especially on busy highways like U.S. Route 60. The death of Sharon Williams has left family members and the local community mourning as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
