EAST WINDSOR, Conn. — A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a 69-year-old man Tuesday evening after he became trapped beneath a tractor-trailer in East Windsor. Authorities say the incident occurred during what appears to have been routine maintenance, leaving the community mourning a sudden and devastating loss.

East Windsor Police said officers were dispatched around 6:45 p.m. on January 6, 2026, to 297 North Road for a report of an unresponsive adult male lodged underneath a tractor-trailer car carrier. When officers arrived, they found the man trapped beneath the right side of the cab portion of the truck, caught between the dual wheels.

Fire crews from the Broad Brook Fire Department, Warehouse Point Fire Department, and Enfield Fire Department responded to assist with the complex extrication. Emergency responders worked carefully to free the man from beneath the heavy vehicle. Once he was dislodged, East Windsor EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the man was performing maintenance work underneath the truck cab when the vehicle rolled backward. Officials emphasized that there is no indication of criminal activity or foul play involved.

The victim was identified as William Hastings, 69, of East Windsor. Police confirmed that next of kin has been notified. Hastings’ death has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among those who knew him as a hardworking individual experienced with mechanical and maintenance work.

Due to the nature of the incident, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) responded to the scene and has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
