GRAND BLANC, Mich. — The Grand Blanc community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Logan Welch, a beloved middle school football coach who died following a workplace shooting Wednesday morning at Trims Unlimited in Almont.
Authorities say the shooting occurred around 8:20 a.m. at the auto-trim manufacturing facility on M-53, when a 32-year-old man from Columbus, Macomb County, opened fire. Welch, who was working at the time, suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting an active police search.
Welch was well known in Grand Blanc for his dedication to mentoring young athletes. After playing football at Grand Blanc High School, he returned to the district in 2020 to coach the seventh-grade team at Grand Blanc West Middle School. His passion for the game and his commitment to helping students grow both on and off the field made him a deeply respected figure among players, parents, and staff.
In a statement, Grand Blanc Community Schools expressed profound sorrow, describing Welch as “a positive influence and role model whose impact extended far beyond the football field.” The district made grief counseling services available for staff and students at West Middle School and Holy Family Catholic School, where Welch’s family has long-standing ties. His mother is a second-grade teacher at Holy Family, and the school community has come together in prayer and support.
As investigators work to determine a motive, Almont Police and the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office continue to search for answers. The suspect’s name has not yet been released, and authorities have not confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact local law enforcement.
The tragic loss of Logan Welch has sent shockwaves through Grand Blanc and beyond. Friends, former players, and community members have flooded social media with tributes, remembering him as a caring coach, a devoted son, and a friend who made everyone feel valued. His legacy, they say, will live on through the young lives he inspired.
