A tragic pedestrian crash in Las Cruces has claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman after she was struck by a pickup truck Monday evening. The incident has left the community saddened and serves as another reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on busy roadways, especially after dark.

The Las Cruces Police Department identified the victim as Charlotte M. Bates, 54, of Hobbs, New Mexico. Police said the deadly crash happened near the 500 block of South Telshor Boulevard, a heavily traveled area lined with businesses and frequent traffic. Officers were called to the scene after receiving reports of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

According to investigators, Bates was attempting to cross the roadway when she was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck. Police determined that she was not using a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash. The impact caused severe injuries, prompting immediate emergency response from police and medical personnel.

Bates was quickly transported to Memorial Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, she later died from her injuries, police confirmed. Authorities said her death was the result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Based on the information gathered so far, officials said they do not expect to file charges against the driver. No signs of impairment or reckless driving were reported, and the incident is being treated as a tragic accident.

The Las Cruces Police Department continues to remind both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and follow traffic laws. Officers urge pedestrians to use marked crosswalks whenever possible and encourage drivers to watch carefully for people crossing the street, especially during evening hours when visibility may be reduced. As the investigation wraps up, the community is left mourning the loss of Charlotte M. Bates and reflecting on the importance of roadway safety to help prevent future tragedies.
