Lafayette Business Owner Lerhonda Carter Killed in Daylight Shooting; Two Arrested

The Lafayette community is grieving after the tragic death of Lerhonda Carter “LuLu”, a well-known local business owner who was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in Scott. Police have confirmed that two people are now in custody in connection with her death, an incident that has shaken residents and left many searching for answers.

According to a press release from the Scott Police Department, Carter, 40, was shot during a violent encounter that unfolded in broad daylight. Officers say the shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. on December 30, 2025, in the 800 block of Delhomme Avenue. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire in the area.

Investigators say Carter was found suffering from serious gunshot wounds. She was quickly transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, Carter later died from her injuries, police confirmed. Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends, customers, and fellow business owners who knew her as a hardworking entrepreneur with a big heart.

As the investigation moved forward, detectives identified James Michael Joseph as a suspect in the case. Police say Joseph was arrested and charged with second-degree murder under Louisiana law. A second suspect, Jessie Howard Alfred Jr., was also taken into custody and charged with accessory after the fact of second-degree murder for his alleged role following the shooting.

While Carter was widely recognized in the Lafayette area for her business ventures and community presence, police emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.
