Debbra Daniel Struck and Killed While Crossing Highway After Helping Elderly Man

ROCKPORT, Texas — A tragic vehicle–pedestrian crash claimed the life of a Rockport woman Monday evening, Dec. 22, leaving the community in shock and mourning. Police said the incident happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Business State Highway 35 South. The victim was later identified as 53-year-old Debbra Gail Daniel, a local resident whose final moments were marked by an act of kindness.

According to the Rockport Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. When officers arrived, they found Daniel lying in the roadway after being hit by a northbound vehicle traveling in the inside lane. Officers immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR, and continued their efforts until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Despite the rapid response and continued medical care, Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said next of kin were notified shortly afterward. The sudden loss of life deeply affected first responders and bystanders, as authorities worked to secure the area and begin the investigation.

Investigators said the vehicle involved was a 2014 Toyota RAV4 driven by an 81-year-old woman, who was the sole occupant. Officers conducted a standardized field sobriety evaluation, including a Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, and reported that no signs of intoxication were observed. As a precaution, the driver was transported by EMS to Rockport 24/7 ER for medical evaluation.

Preliminary findings show that Daniel had been helping an elderly man cross Business SH 35 at the intersection of West Corpus Christi Street, moving from east to west. After ensuring the man crossed safely, Daniel reportedly turned and began crossing back toward the east side of the roadway. It was during this return crossing that she was struck in the inside southbound lane.

Video footage from a nearby business captured the incident and is being reviewed by investigators. Rockport Police Department Accident Investigator Jensen is leading the case. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police extended their condolences to Daniel’s family and urged anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to contact the Rockport Police Department.
