The city of Scranton is struggling to make sense of a heartbreaking tragedy after a violent attack inside the Jermyn Apartments left two people dead, one critically injured, and a beloved service dog killed. Authorities in Lackawanna County released the names of the victims on Wednesday, confirming the devastating losses that have shaken the downtown community. What began as a routine Tuesday evening turned into a night of terror that residents will not soon forget.
According to the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office, the victims were identified as 61-year-old Linda Fortuna and 59-year-old Terry Muller, both residents of the sixth floor of the Jermyn Apartments. Officials also confirmed that Muller’s service dog, Nayla—a golden retriever known and loved by many—was killed during the attack. Friends and neighbors say Nayla was more than a companion; she was essential to Muller’s daily life, making her loss especially painful alongside the human toll.
A third victim, 66-year-old Marilyn Waller, was seriously injured in the same incident. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical condition as medical teams work to stabilize her. Authorities have not released updates on her prognosis, but the community is holding onto hope for her recovery. The suddenness and brutality of the attack have left residents deeply shaken, especially those who live in the building and knew the victims personally.
Police responded to the Jermyn Apartments after multiple emergency calls reported a disturbance on the sixth floor. When officers arrived, they learned that the suspect, 38-year-old Michael Woods, had allegedly attacked the three women. Investigators say Woods was located just outside the building and taken into custody quickly and without further incident. His capture prevented additional harm and allowed officers to immediately focus on aiding the victims.
During a Wednesday press briefing, District Attorney Brian Gallagher shared more background information about the suspect. Woods had lived in the building since 2020 after moving from Jersey City, New Jersey.
