A tragic single-vehicle crash in Caribou County claimed the life of a Blackfoot man on Saturday evening, leaving another injured and the community reminded of the risks that come with off-road travel. Idaho State Police say the crash happened around 5:55 p.m. on Kelly Toponce Road near Bancroft, where a side-by-side ATV carrying two men overturned after the driver suddenly lost control.
According to investigators, 58-year-old Jlee Smith of Blackfoot was driving the ATV northbound with a 66-year-old male passenger beside him. For reasons still under review, the vehicle veered off the roadway and rolled, throwing both men during the violent overturn. Troopers noted that neither Smith nor his passenger was wearing a seatbelt at the time — a decision that may have increased the severity of their injuries when the ATV crashed.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and transported both men to nearby hospitals by ground ambulance. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Smith did not survive his injuries and was later pronounced dead. His passenger, though injured, suffered non-life-threatening harm and is expected to recover fully in the coming days.
The Caribou County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Smith’s identity and will be conducting additional examinations to determine the official cause and manner of death. Meanwhile, Idaho State Police say the investigation remains active as they work to piece together the events that led up to the ATV leaving the roadway. Factors such as road conditions, possible mechanical issues, and driver error will all be examined as part of the ongoing review.
Local authorities are once again using this tragedy as a reminder of the importance of safety equipment while operating off-road vehicles. Seatbelts, helmets, and other protective gear play a crucial role in preventing serious or fatal injuries during crashes — especially in rollovers, which remain one of the most common types of ATV-related accidents.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Jlee Smith, a man whose life ended unexpectedly during what should have been a routine ride. Officials urge riders to prioritize safety, stay aware of changing conditions, and ensure all passengers are properly secured before heading onto Idaho’s rural roads and trails.
