The Greenville community is struggling to come to terms with a heartbreaking tragedy after a man and woman were found dead inside their home on West Morgan Street Friday afternoon. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded to the residence around 1:50 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting two unresponsive individuals. When they arrived, they discovered the pair with gunshot wounds, prompting an immediate and intense investigation.
According to the Greenville County Coroner, the victims were identified as Ernesto Madrigal-Guzman and Ana Belen Martinez-Argueta. The couple, who lived together, were found in the same room, each having been shot in the head. Their deaths have left family members devastated and the community shocked. As investigators examined the scene, loved ones clung to one another nearby, visibly shaken by the sudden and violent loss. Deputies worked carefully around the property, gathering evidence that may help uncover what led to the tragic incident.
Neighbors said they were stunned to learn that such a tragedy had unfolded on their street. Some described the neighborhood as generally quiet, while others noted that recent acts of violence have left many feeling uneasy. “Right now I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s sad. It really is,” neighbor John Harts said. “It’s bad any time, but the holidays too—you know. I just pray for the families.” His words echoed the growing concern shared by many who now worry for the safety of their own loved ones.
The area surrounding West Morgan Street has experienced violence before, adding to the community’s distress. Just over two weeks ago and only one street away, 24-year-old Maria Rico was shot and killed inside her home. The recent string of tragedies has left residents searching for answers and fearing that the sense of safety they once felt may be slipping away. Many hope that increased awareness and communication will help prevent further loss of life.
Greenville County Coroner Mike Ellis emphasized how especially painful incidents like this can be during the holiday season. “Tragedy like this stands out a lot more during the holidays,” Ellis said. “There’s nothing wrong with checking on your neighbors, regardless of the circumstances. If you see something, say something.” His reminder encouraged community members to look out for one another and to report anything suspicious.
As of now, deputies say the investigation into the double shooting remains active and ongoing. No suspects have been identified, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. While investigators continue their work, the community is left to grieve, support the victims’ families, and hope that answers will soon shed light on what happened inside the quiet home on West Morgan Street.
