WILKESBORO, N.C. — The Wilkesboro community is grieving after a tragic wrong-way crash on US-421 late Thursday night claimed the life of 76-year-old Willa Church. The heartbreaking collision occurred around 11:50 p.m., according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, when a Ford traveling southbound in the northbound lanes slammed head-on into an oncoming Subaru.
Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that Church, the driver of the Ford, died from her injuries at the scene. Despite the devastating impact, the driver of the Subaru, 22-year-old Carson Sullivan, survived. Sullivan was transported to a nearby hospital with non–life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.
Authorities say the crash unfolded in a matter of seconds and that there was no indication of speed, alcohol, or impairment playing a role. At this stage, no charges will be filed, and investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding how Church came to be driving in the wrong direction on the divided highway.
