UNION HALL, VA — A 75-year-old man who was reported missing Wednesday evening has been found dead in the water near Beech Drive in Union Hall, Virginia. Authorities have identified the victim as Tom Stenson, a resident of McGaheysville. His body was discovered after a multi-agency search on Smith Mountain Lake.
The Franklin County Communications Center received a 911 call around 7 p.m. reporting that Stenson had gone missing. In response, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office organized a coordinated search operation. The effort included assistance from Franklin County Public Safety, Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue, Virginia Conservation Police, and the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
Rescue teams quickly launched a search focused on the Union Hall area of Smith Mountain Lake. After several hours of searching both by land and water, officials located a body in the lake. It was later confirmed to be Stenson. His remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities say that, based on initial findings, there are no signs of foul play or suspicious activity. However, the investigation remains ongoing as they await the results of the autopsy. It is still unclear what events led to Stenson ending up in the water or whether he had been involved in any recreational activity at the time of his disappearance.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office extended its deepest condolences to Stenson’s family and thanked all agencies that assisted in the search. “This is a difficult time for the family, and we appreciate the swift response and cooperation from all involved,” the department said in a statement.
Community members in Union Hall and McGaheysville are mourning the sudden loss. Stenson was described by those who knew him as a kind and gentle man. His death has raised awareness about water safety, especially for elderly individuals during the summer months when lake activity increases. Officials urge the public to remain cautious near water and take preventive steps to avoid similar tragedies. Updates will be released as the investigation continues.
