The community of Stockton is reeling after authorities confirmed the identities of the four people killed in a devastating mass shooting over the weekend. Officials announced Wednesday morning that the victims include two 8-year-old girls, a 14-year-old boy, and a 21-year-old man. What began as a family gathering meant for joy and celebration ended in unimaginable tragedy, leaving families shattered and the city desperately seeking answers and justice.
The youngest victims, 8-year-old Maya Lupian and 8-year-old Journey Rose Reotutar Guerrero, were both described as bright, loving children who brought light into the lives of those around them. Maya, a student at Aspire Apex Academy, was remembered by her school district as an outgoing girl who excelled in her studies and loved dancing, singing, drawing, and karate. She held a purple belt and was known for her energy and kindness. Maya was preparing to celebrate her 9th birthday on December 13, a milestone her family now mourns in grief rather than joy.
Journey Rose, also just 8 years old, was a student in the Stockton Unified School District, where her mother works as a teacher. The district expressed deep sorrow, describing the young girl as intelligent, compassionate, and a natural helper who inspired her family to do their best. Journey loved trivia, math games, and gymnastics, and dreamed of becoming a doctor one day. Loved ones said she had big goals and a future full of promise—one that was tragically cut short by senseless violence.
The third victim, 14-year-old Amari Peterson, was remembered by his family as a loving son and a devoted athlete with dreams of attending college. His father, Patrick Peterson, shared heartbreaking memories of wishing he could hug his son again, cut his hair, or simply wake him up for school. Amari played both football and basketball and was known for his joyful spirit. According to a fundraising page, he was simply “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” attending a children’s party when the shooting occurred.
The oldest victim, 21-year-old Susano Archuleta, was described by his family as deeply loved and connected to many throughout the community. He was cherished by friends, relatives, and neighbors who are now mourning the sudden, painful loss of a young man with his entire adult life ahead of him. Loved ones say his absence leaves a void that words cannot fully express.
In addition to the four who died, officials confirmed that two more victims self-transported to the hospital, bringing the total injured to 13. Both Stockton Unified School District and Aspire Public Schools have deployed mental health counselors to help students and staff cope with the tragedy. Support systems remain in place as families and the broader community struggle to process the heartbreak.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi, Crime Stoppers, and local officials have offered a combined $25,000 reward, while the FBI and the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office have added $50,000—bringing the total reward to $75,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The entire community now waits, united in grief, hoping justice will soon be served for Maya, Journey, Amari, and Susano—four innocent lives lost too soon.
