GOODLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A quiet Sunday afternoon turned heartbreaking for the close-knit North Branch community when 49-year-old Steven Henderson lost his life in a single-vehicle crash on southbound M-53 (Van Dyke) near Muck Road. The crash occurred around 4:00 p.m., and despite the swift response of emergency crews, Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, Henderson was driving a 2023 Kia K5 when his vehicle veered off the roadway on a curved stretch, entered a ditch, struck an embankment, became airborne, and rolled before coming to rest on its tires. Tragically, he was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. A passing motorist stopped immediately, calling 911 and performing CPR, but Henderson’s injuries proved fatal.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including Lapeer County deputies, the Imlay City Police Department, the Goodland Township Fire Department, Lapeer County EMS, and the Metamora Township Police Drone Division. The county’s Crash Reconstruction Team was also called to the scene to investigate. Authorities closed a section of Van Dyke for nearly three hours to allow for cleanup and documentation of evidence.
Investigators say the cause of the crash remains under review. At this point, there is no indication that alcohol or excessive speed played a role in the wreck. However, deputies emphasized that the absence of a seatbelt likely contributed to the fatal outcome. Officials continue to analyze scene data and vehicle evidence as they work toward a final determination.
For residents of North Branch, Henderson’s death has left a profound void. Neighbors and friends describe him as a warm-hearted, dependable man — someone who would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. “Steven was the kind of person who cared about everyone,” said one longtime neighbor. “He made our community stronger just by being part of it.” His generosity and good humor are being fondly remembered by all who knew him.
In the days since the crash, friends and family have been gathering to share memories of Henderson’s kindness and laughter. Plans are underway for a Celebration of Life service, to be announced soon. Until then, North Branch grieves the loss of a beloved friend and neighbor — a man remembered for his compassion, humility, and the countless small ways he made his community better.
