Authorities in Rochester have identified the woman who was tragically killed by a stray bullet early Sunday morning in the city’s northeast side. The victim has been named as 31-year-old Kitana Kendrick, a Rochester resident, according to Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department (RPD). The deadly shooting occurred around 1:50 a.m. on November 2 near Pulaski Park on Gothic Street, prompting an emergency response after multiple reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Kendrick lying in the street with a serious upper-body injury. Emergency responders transported her to Strong Memorial Hospital, but despite all efforts, she was later pronounced dead. The sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the community, with family and friends mourning a young woman who, police say, was not the intended target.
Investigators believe Kendrick was struck by a stray bullet during a dispute that erupted among several individuals nearby. Captain Umbrino explained that while Kendrick was present at the scene, she was not involved in the altercation. None of those arguing lived on Gothic Street, suggesting the confrontation began elsewhere before moving to the residential area. Police are now working to determine the source of the gunfire and the motive behind the conflict.
The RPD Major Crimes Unit has taken over the case, collecting surveillance footage, physical evidence, and witness statements in an effort to identify those responsible. So far, no arrests have been made, and detectives are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information, videos, or tips is urged to contact 911, the Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157, Crime Stoppers at (585) 423-9300, or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov

The RPD extended its condolences to Kendrick’s loved ones and reaffirmed its commitment to finding justice. Community leaders have also voiced their grief and frustration, calling for stronger efforts to prevent violent conflicts before they spiral out of control. The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about gun violence in Rochester, particularly incidents where innocent bystanders become victims of disputes that turn deadly.
Local organizations and outreach groups are now offering support to Kendrick’s family and the affected community. Advocates stress the importance of dialogue, conflict resolution, and mentoring programs to curb violence and promote peace. As the investigation continues, the city of Rochester mourns another life lost too soon—a stark reminder of the lasting toll that gun violence leaves behind.
