Newalla Man James Tynes Killed in Rural Seminole County Crash After Turning Into Oncoming Car

Authorities in Oklahoma have released additional details about a fatal collision in Seminole County that claimed the life of a Newalla man on Wednesday morning. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) confirmed that 79-year-old James E. Tynes died at the scene after his vehicle entered the path of another car along a rural stretch of State Highway 59. The deadly crash has left investigators working to determine exactly what led to the tragic moment.

The collision occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of 3610 Road and State Highway 59, a location where fast-moving traffic and limited visibility can create dangerous conditions. According to OHP, Tynes was attempting to turn onto the highway when his car crossed directly in front of an oncoming vehicle traveling westbound on SH-59. Troopers said the driver of the second vehicle tried to swerve to avoid the crash, but there was not enough time or space to prevent the impact. The force of the collision was severe, leaving Tynes with fatal injuries.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Tynes was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. A passenger riding with him was also hurt and taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Officials have not yet shared further information about the passenger’s condition, but they noted that both Tynes and the passenger were wearing seat belts, something investigators say often reduces the severity of injuries. In this case, however, the crash’s impact was too significant to overcome.

The driver of the second vehicle was not injured and remained at the scene to speak with troopers. OHP has not released that driver’s name and has not confirmed whether any other passengers were in the car. Investigators are now working to reconstruct the crash, a process that includes examining vehicle damage, measuring skid marks, evaluating sightlines, and reviewing conditions at the time of the collision. They may also interview witnesses and consider whether speed, road layout, or environmental factors contributed in any way.

Intersections like the one at 3610 Road and SH-59 are known to be challenging, especially in rural areas where long stretches of highway allow vehicles to travel at higher speeds. Troopers say that even familiar routes can be risky, and they urge drivers to take extra time when turning onto major roadways. Ensuring that no vehicles are approaching, especially from a distance, is a key safety step that can prevent serious crashes.

As the investigation continues, OHP has not indicated whether any citations will be issued or whether additional findings are expected. Officials say more information may be released once they complete their evaluation of the crash scene and all contributing factors. For now, the incident stands as another somber reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn tragic, leaving families and communities grieving the sudden loss of a loved one.
