Patricia Shepard Killed in Suspected Mistaken-Identity Shooting at Hammond Gas Station

The Hammond community is mourning the tragic loss of Patricia Shepard, a 50-year-old woman who was shot and killed early Thursday morning in what authorities believe was a case of mistaken identity. The heartbreaking incident unfolded at a Chevron gas station along Highway 190, leaving family, friends, and residents shocked by the senseless violence that claimed the life of an innocent woman.

According to the Hammond Police Department, officers responded to the gas station near Westin Oak Drive around 1:15 a.m. after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they discovered Shepard inside a gray sedan parked at a gas pump. Investigators said she had been struck multiple times by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later identified her as a passenger who was simply getting a ride home from work when tragedy struck.

Police say surveillance footage revealed that a white sedan pulled alongside the gray vehicle before two suspects exited and opened fire. Investigators estimate that between 70 and 80 rounds were fired into the car. After the shooting, the suspects quickly fled the scene, traveling westbound toward Interstate 55. Detectives immediately launched an intensive investigation to identify those responsible and determine what led to the deadly attack.

Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. said investigators believe the suspects were targeting someone else and mistakenly thought the intended target was still inside the vehicle. According to police, the individual they were allegedly seeking had already exited the car before the shooting occurred. Bergeron described Shepard as a completely innocent victim who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. His comments reflected the frustration and sadness felt throughout the community following the violent crime.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects’ vehicle had been stolen during a carjacking in McComb, Mississippi, two days before the shooting. Detectives have traveled to Mississippi and are working alongside other law enforcement agencies to track down those involved. Authorities indicated they have developed information regarding possible motives but are withholding those details while the investigation remains active.

As loved ones grieve the sudden loss of Patricia Shepard, many are remembering her life rather than the violence that ended it. Her death serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed by criminal acts. Investigators continue to seek information from the public and hope that those responsible will soon be brought to justice. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Hammond Police or Crime Stoppers.
