A tragic child neglect case has shocked the community after authorities charged 25-year-old Valencia Duke of Washington, D.C., in connection with the death of her 13-month-old daughter, Mazouri Jones. Investigators allege that Duke left her twin children alone inside an apartment for nearly four days with little food, water, or supervision. The heartbreaking incident has drawn widespread attention as details continue to emerge about the children’s living conditions and the circumstances surrounding the young girl’s death.
According to law enforcement officials, the case came to light on January 18 when police responded to a report of an unconscious child at an apartment. Upon arriving at the residence, officers discovered Mazouri Jones deceased inside a playpen. Authorities stated that the child had already begun to decompose. Her twin brother was found alive but in critical condition, suffering from severe dehydration, malnourishment, and hypothermia. Emergency responders immediately transported the surviving child to receive medical treatment.
Investigators allege that Duke spent only a brief amount of time with the twins during a 92-hour period, leaving them unattended for most of those four days. Court documents indicate that the children were left without adequate care, food, or water. Authorities described the surviving child as being so hungry that he reportedly attempted to chew on a paramedic’s stethoscope, apparently mistaking it for food.
Police also described the apartment as being in extremely poor condition. Investigators reported finding trash, dirty laundry, spoiled food, and suspected illegal narcotics inside the residence. The disturbing conditions further raised concerns about the children’s welfare and the environment in which they had been living. Officials gathered evidence from the apartment as part of their ongoing investigation.
An autopsy later determined that Mazouri Jones died from dehydration and malnourishment caused by neglect. Medical examiners ruled her death a homicide. The findings led authorities to pursue serious criminal charges against Duke, including first-degree felony murder in connection with her daughter’s death, as well as two counts of cruelty to children.
Duke has since appeared in court, where her attorney informed the judge that she is approximately 13 weeks pregnant. She remains at the center of a case that has sparked outrage and sadness among many following the investigation. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 11, when prosecutors are expected to present additional evidence. Meanwhile, the surviving twin continues to receive care as the legal process moves forward.
