The Sullivan County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 59-year-old Bradley D. Galenski of Sullivan, Indiana, who tragically lost his life in a devastating head-on collision on US 41 near Old Highway 54. The fatal crash has left family members, friends, and residents shocked as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. What began as a normal morning quickly turned into a scene of sorrow and heartbreak that has deeply affected the local community.
According to preliminary reports from the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post, the crash happened around 11:00 a.m. Investigators say Galenski was driving a 1998 Ford Ranger southbound in the northbound lanes of US 41. Before the collision occurred, several drivers had already called 911 to report a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the highway. The alarming reports raised immediate concern among motorists and law enforcement as the dangerous situation unfolded on the busy roadway.
At the same time, a 2026 Freightliner driven by 71-year-old Clarence Mackey of Alapaha, Georgia, was traveling northbound in the correct lane. Authorities say Mackey saw the pickup truck approaching him head-on and quickly attempted to avoid the crash. Despite his efforts to move out of danger, the collision could not be avoided. The impact was severe, causing the Ford Ranger to leave the roadway and roll onto its side before stopping. Tragically, Bradley Galenski was ejected from the vehicle during the violent crash.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and worked under difficult conditions to assist everyone involved. Sadly, Galenski suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Mary Ann Dudley of the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office. The Freightliner crossed the median after the impact and eventually stopped in the southbound lanes. Authorities later confirmed that Bradley’s family had been notified as loved ones began grieving the sudden and painful loss.
Indiana State Police stated that toxicology results are still pending while investigators continue examining what caused the vehicle to travel in the wrong direction. Troopers Rondell Shelton and Kyle Hall are leading the crash reconstruction investigation to determine all factors that may have contributed to the deadly incident. Several agencies, including the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, Farmersburg Police Department, SCAT 1, and Curtis Wrecker Service, assisted at the scene during the emergency response.
As the investigation continues, those who knew Bradley Galenski are remembering him as more than a victim of a tragic accident. He was a beloved member of the Sullivan community whose sudden passing has left a deep void in the lives of many. Friends and family are now left holding onto cherished memories while mourning a life taken far too soon. His tragic death also serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change on the road in just a matter of moments.
