WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a tragic crash that claimed the life of a 75-year-old man Sunday night after he was struck by a vehicle on New Walkertown Road. The incident occurred around 8:56 p.m., according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Officials identified the victim as Roy Stevenson. Police say Stevenson was attempting to cross New Walkertown Road outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 32-year-old Dexteria Emon Taylor. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the collision and found Stevenson unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, Taylor, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Police said she was later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No citations or charges have been announced at this time as the investigation continues.
The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is leading the investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash. Officials have not stated whether speed, lighting conditions, or other factors contributed to the collision. The area was closed to traffic for several hours Sunday night as officers processed the scene and collected evidence.
Stevenson’s family has been notified of his passing. Friends and neighbors described him as a kind and friendly man who had lived in the community for many years. The news of his death has left residents deeply saddened, with some urging city officials to consider improved lighting or pedestrian crossings in the area to help prevent future tragedies.
Authorities are reminding both drivers and pedestrians to exercise extra caution, especially during nighttime hours. They encourage pedestrians to use designated crosswalks and reflective clothing, while urging motorists to remain alert and reduce speed in residential or dimly lit areas. The Winston-Salem Police Department said no further information is available at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
